BEFORE BUYING A 2nd HAND VEHICLE IN THE UK

via

Trader / Garage or Private individual

CHECK 1

To confirm that the registration number matches the vehicle you are considering. This will confirm all the basic vehicle details check here… “https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/

CHECK 2

To confirm the MOT History of the vehicle you are considering. This will show any and all advisories at the time of the MOT. This will also show if the vehicle failed the MOT. Plus, whether advisories were necessary to complete the MOT and finally whether they were corrected on the day and then the vehicle passed the MOT check here… “https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Once you have completed the above checks you should be able to rest easy concerning the vehicle. The Garage / Trader that you purchase from should supply a couple of forms to confirm the HPI check (no outstanding finance or write off) and confirm the mileage anyway.

Should you buy from a private individual, check 1 & 2 above will be more reassuring (print them all off and keep them to confirm the details with the seller). Then haggle on the price if MOT advisories are showing or mileage incorrect (vehicle been clocked).

CHECK 3

If the Garage / Trader are unable to supply or confirm vehicle details (good ones will, stay away from those who don’t). Or you just want to be Double Sure you can get a complete history, HPI whether Written  off, stolen and mileage confirmation for a few £££ which could save you hundreds if not thousands of £££. Just enter the registration number then click Search and (scroll down for all your options), regular folks usually go for the £9.95 history print out… “https://www.mycarcheck.com/

Remember, a good Trader or Garage should have this already for you. Private individuals rarely will unless they are selling something special…

ROAD TAX

The dreaded Road Fund License (taxing your vehicle). Practically all done online now… “https://vehicletax.service.gov.uk/
