These changes may make a major difference to your motoring budget, and even the\u00a0health of UK residents!<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2>&#8211; In 2017, VED will be split into three bands &#8211; zero, standard and premium. Because of these harmful gases, cars in the UK are regulated by Euro emissions standards, but, as we\u2019ve seen in the news recently, not all manufacturers are staying within the lines.<\/p>\n<h2>Buying a car<\/h2>\n<p>A car is undoubtedly an expensive purchase, and there are a lot of things to consider beyond the initial outlay. There\u2019s fuel, maintenance and, of course, tax (Vehicle Excise Duty, VED) which takes emissions into account for pricing.<\/p>\n<p>Vehicle tax rates are based on engine size, or fuel type and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, depending on when the vehicle was registered.<\/p>\n<p>The rates are split into bands; the lower the emissions, the lower the vehicle tax.<\/p>\n<p>For cars registered on or after 1st March 2001 the rate of VED is based on fuel type and CO2 emissions, and the prices vary quite drastically.<\/p>\n<h2>VED rates<\/h2>\n<p>VED at the lower end of the band is free for petrol or diesel cars that emit up to 100g per km of CO2, after that you\u2019ll pay \u00a320 a year for cars emitting between 101 and 110g\/km.<\/p>\n<p>The most expensive category is for cars emitting over 255g\/km and it will cost up to \u00a3540.75 for a year\u2019s tax. Brand new cars in the highest emissions bracket will set you back \u00a31,120 if bought in the first year of registration.<\/p>\n<p>However, all this is set to change in 2017 when VED will be transformed into three bands \u2013 zero, standard and premium.
