{"id":3157,"date":"2016-03-01T15:52:25","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T15:52:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.foxnwolf.com\/locknload\/?p=3157"},"modified":"2016-03-01T15:52:25","modified_gmt":"2016-03-01T15:52:25","slug":"cyprus-a-forgotten-war-to-be-remembered-at-the-national-memorial-arboretum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foxnwolf.com\/locknload\/?p=3157","title":{"rendered":"Cyprus &#8211; A Forgotten War To Be Remembered At The National Memorial Arboretum"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Cyprus &#8211; A Forgotten War To Be Remembered At The National Memorial Arboretum<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The 371 British servicemen who died in the\u00a0\u2018forgotten\u2019 war \u2013 on Cyprus in the 1950s \u2013 are to be commemorated at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Thanks to ex Royal\u00a0Military Policeman David Littlemore and\u00a0the RAF\u00a0a large piece of Cyprus stone has been brought back to the U.K. where a stonemason will drill out a special chamber to house a copper capsule which will contain a roll of honour bearing\u00a0the names of the servicemen who died on the island between 1955 and 1959.\u00a0Most were conscripts \u2013 some of the last to lose their lives while carrying out their National Service.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Cyprus Emergency, as it was known at the time, saw a series of murderous attacks on servicemen in the then British colony by EOKA &#8211; the Greek acronym for National Organisation of Cypriot Fighters.\u00a0Although there is now a large memorial in Kyrenia\u00a0Cyprus recording the servicemen\u2019s names and regiments, until now there hasn\u2019t been a presence at The National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire\u00a0solely for those who served in the trouble spot.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">The stone should arrive soon at The Arboretum\u00a0 but we\u2019re still waiting to hear when it will be officially unveiled and dedicated.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">I\u2019d love to hear from any Cyprus veterans &#8211; who served between 1955 and 1959 \u2013 along with friends and relatives, so I can add them to a database and keep them updated on progress and the date of dedication.<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2009\u00a0some of the next of kin of our deceased comrades\u00a0are entitled to receive The Elizabeth Cross.<\/h3>\n<h3>I can be contacted by email at\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:cyprusveterans@gmail.com\" target=\"_blank\">cyprusveterans&#8221;at&#8221;gmail.<wbr \/>com<\/a><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cyprus &#8211; A Forgotten War To Be Remembered At The National Memorial Arboretum The 371 British servicemen who died in the\u00a0\u2018forgotten\u2019 war \u2013 on Cyprus in the 1950s \u2013 are to be commemorated at the National Arboretum in Staffordshire.
