the curved blade seen being used in a demonstration by Gurkha soldiers in this file photograph<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">His unit had been told that they were seeking a \u2018high value target,\u2019 a Taliban commander, and that they must prove they had killed the right man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The Gurkhas had intended to remove the Taliban leader\u2019s body from the battlefield for identification purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">However, Army sources revealed at the time that he told investigators he had unsheathed his kukri \u2013 the symbolic weapon of the Gurkhas \u2013 after running out of ammunition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">&#8216;Thankfully he has been returned to normal duties having had a question mark hanging over his future for some time,&#8217; a military source told The Sun. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"art-insert news\">\n<h3 class=\"wocc\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">KUKRI: REGIMENT&#8217;S PROUD SYMBOL OF VALOUR <\/span><\/h3>\n<div class=\"ins cleared xolcc bdrcc\">\n<div class=\"clear\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"image-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"blkBorder aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/pix\/2011\/10\/17\/article-2049987-025AF1B6000005DC-719_223x147.jpg\" alt=\"Gurkha soldiers wearing their traditional Kukri knives\" width=\"223\" height=\"147\" \/><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The iconic kukri knife used by the Gurkhas can be a weapon or a tool.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">It is the traditional utility knife of the Nepalese people, but is mainly known as a symbolic weapon for Gurkha regiments all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The kukri signifies courage and valour on the battlefield and is sometimes worn by bridegrooms during their wedding ceremony.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The kukri\u2019s heavy blade inflicts deep wounds, cutting muscle and bone in one stroke.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">It can also be used in stealth operations to slash an enemy\u2019s throat, killing him silently.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">&#8216;This particular Gurkha is good soldier and has a good record.&#8217; <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The Gurkha faced a court martial and possible jail sentence if he had been found guilty of a war crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">However, the decision taken was that the soldier was fighting for his life and did not have time to reload his weapon as his victim attacked. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">The Gurkhas had intended to remove the Taliban leader\u2019s body from the battlefield for identification purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">But they came under heavy fire as their tried to do so. Military sources said that in the heat of battle, the Gurkha took out his curved kukri knife and beheaded the dead insurgent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">He is understood to have removed the man\u2019s head from the area, leaving the rest of his body on the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">This is considered a gross insult to the Muslims of Afghanistan, who bury the entire body of their dead even if parts have to be retrieved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 1.2em;\">British soldiers often return missing body parts once a battle has ended so the dead can be buried in one piece.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; A Gurkha solider who beheaded a Taliban gunman and carried his head back to base in a bag has been cleared to resume his duties.
